Youtube: New Video Editor

YouTube has just released a new video editor that lets you create video mashups and edit down clips from your library of existing video uploads. The feature should be rolled out to all YouTube users by the end of the day.

The new service enables you to edit together separate clips, as well as add or change the background music using YouTube’s commercial AudioSwap library of licensed songs. As of right now, the service and its features are pretty basic, but could prove valuable for users that either want to create longer montages or playlists, or do basic editing jobs.

As CNET notes, services like the YouTube editor showcase Google’s commitment to creating a suite of web-based creative tools. While limited in scope right now, we could actually see a more advanced version of the YouTube video editor being integrated into Chrome OS as a purely-web based video solution.

In a not-so-secret double life, Jennifer Morrison is simply "Jennifer," platonic friend for hire.

The reservation-taker at a popular Las Vegas restaurant has accepted cash to show an introverted, out-of-town computer programmer around the Pinball Hall of Fame and the Bellagio's famous dancing fountains.

A bored grandmother visiting family from the Midwest hired her for an afternoon movie. A stay-at-home mom who was new to the area paid her to come on over to do some scrapbooking. Morrison, 31, met a traveling businessman at the airport with a folder of research he requested on things to do and helped him rent a car.

It's all because of a new arrival to the Web-fueled, rent-an-everything revolution -- Rentafriend.com.

"You look at a site like this and think, 'Oh, they must all be escorts or it's a dating site or something,' " said Morrison, a mother of a 2-year-old who signed on with the blessing of her husband. "When I first saw it I had mixed feelings about it. I thought it was kind of sad that people have to do this."

While Morrison is happy to meet new people and make a little extra money, charging $20 to $30 an hour, she's not the only one to think lonely thoughts about the 7-month-old service modeled on similar, hugely successful sites in Japan and elsewhere in Asia.

In a world where friend is a verb and you may never meet some of yours from Facebook, where research indicates chronic loneliness can lead to depression, suicide, high blood pressure and viral infections, where roughly 20 percent of all people -- 60 million in the U.S. alone -- say they feel lonely at any given moment, is renting a friend a solution or stopgap?

"The real question is, is it solving anyone's problems? My first reaction was to roll my eyes, but it may in fact help people meet others and get back into circulation. If it's used as a substitute for meaningful face-to-face relationships, it's not going to work," said John T. Cacioppo, a social neuroscience researcher and co-author of "Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Interaction."

Rentafriend receives 100,000 unique views every month and has nearly 2,000 members who pay $24.95 a month, or $69.95, a year for a login and password to peruse the photos and profiles of 167,000-plus possible pals.

Christopher Barton, 31, of Boulder City, Nev., first tried Rentafriend about six months ago on a business trip training clients for an online university. Living on the road, he hates to eat alone in restaurants and wants to make the most of his downtime.

"I'm in different cities all the time," he said. "You kind of get a tour guide to a certain extent."

He chooses young, attractive women because "I'd just feel weird paying to go out with a guy." A rent-a-pal in Chicago took him to a fun, hole-in-the-wall restaurant he never would have found himself. In New Orleans, he and another rental hit Cafe du Monde in the French Market and Jackson Square.

Started by Scott Rosenbaum in Stewartsville, N.J., a former marketer for dating Web sites, Rentafriend has some competition from offline services that will make platonic matches for a fee, including Rentalocalfriend.com for travelers. The difference, he said, is Rentafriend allows the renter to make a pick, negotiating the cost and making arrangements through e-mail or phone calls.

"People e-mail me all the time about it. Is it legal? Is it really platonic? There's no 100 percent way to be sure, but we have zero tolerance if a friend says they were solicited. There's no second chance," Rosenbaum said.

Rosenbaum's site, like those in Japan, has people renting for lots of reasons. Two students rented parents to meet with college officials after they were caught drinking on campus. A woman once hired a college girl to visit her mother in a nursing home three days a week after she moved away.

"In Japan and China, they're more cultural because having a full family is so important," he said. "It's common to rent a fill-in family member for a wedding, like a father figure or someone to stand in as an important uncle to give a toast."

Rosenbaum's site is set up for search by ZIP code. His rentals skew young, with most ranging from 20 to 35, though there are plenty in their 40s and 50s. Hourly fees range from $10 to a rare $150, usually between $20 and $50.

"When you look at the profiles, there's tons of things people want to do," said Barton, who's an actor. "You can kind of pick and choose and find a profile of somebody who's into what you're into. It's a better kind of experience than going around by yourself."

Morrison mentions her husband and child in her Rentafriend profile and offers that she dances Tahitian style and hip hop. "If you need someone to work out with or just hang out I am your girl. I'm pretty peppy and bubbly if you just need a smile and I have lived a life of someone twice my age if you need an ear and some advice."

She has a full-time job but Rentafriend has helped her earn a little extra. "I'm trying to save more. We'd like to buy a house and just put money away. I treat it like a business, but it isn't my profession."

Ori Brafman, co-author with brother Rom of the new book "Click: The Magic of Instant Connections," said the concept "seems really tragic, kind of surreally tragic" in ways that sex services don't because it symbolizes the worst kind of social isolation.

"The danger isn't Rentafriend per se, but rather what it symbolizes," he said. "We purchase fleeting replacements because, as a society, we lack those close, meaningful bonds that our so essential. "

Does Barton consider himself lonely? Not really. He has buddies, doesn't have a girlfriend and isn't using Rentafriend to find one.

"If I did have a girlfriend, she'd probably want to know what was going on," he said. "I'd use it a little less probably, or maybe I'd start paying guys."

Previously code-named “Project Natal,” the Kinect label was released before the start of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles (E3) as part of a Cirque du Soleil performance that was inspired by Kinect’s technology.
The slim black Kinect sensor plugs directly into any Xbox 360. Despite its small size, the Kinect device contains a camera, audio sensors, and motion-sensing technology that tracks 48 points of movement on the human body. It has the ability to recognize faces and voices.
With Kinect, game-players no longer need to memorize different commands for a hand-held control. “You are the controller,” said Mike Delman, corporate vice president of Global Marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business. “You simply step in front of the sensor and Kinect sees you move, hears your voice and recognizes your face.”
The Cirque du Soleil show at Los Angeles’s Galan Center included few specifics about Kinect. Instead, it focused on the new experiences that it will enable. Microsoft will share more details – including the release date, and some of Kinect’s initial game and entertainment offerings – at a Monday morning news conference that will kick off E3, the gaming industry’s annual show-and-tell event.

Ésa fue la idea que trató de mostrar el Circo del Sol con un espectáculo alegórico con tintes futuristas en el que se planteaba el uso de los controles para manejar las consolas como una etapa primitiva en la evolución del ser humano.
"¿Después de 5 millones de años la máquina se adaptará al hombre?", se preguntaba la voz de fondo que guiaba la actuación momentos antes de que un niño escalara a lo más alto de uno de los decorados para situarse encima de una gran bola con el emblema de Xbox y que simbolizó el inicio a la "era sin mandos".
El acto, no obstante, consistió en una demostración estética carente de detalles sobre la fecha de lanzamiento o el precio de Kinect, aunque sí sirvió para confirmar que se tratará de un dispositivo periférico de varias cámaras que funcionará con la consola Xbox.
"Es completamente compatible con todos los sistemas de Xbox. Una vez conectado, uno puede seguir jugando normalmente con los controles o te puedes pasar al Kinect. El cambio entre uno y otro es fácil y fluido", explicó Lewis.
En cuanto a contenidos, Microsoft dejó ver algunas de las propuestas que llegaran a Kinect, la más interesante fue una versión de "Star Wars" en la que el usuario "empuña" una espada láser y se enfrenta con la flota imperial.
La empresa creadora de Windows quiere que Kinect le sirva para atraer a la Xbox a un tipo de jugador informal y de cualquier edad, un terreno copado actualmente por Nintendo con su consola Wii, la más vendida en todo el mundo.
Para ese fin se lanzarán juegos de habilidad, de entrenamiento deportivo, de carreras de coches, de competición olímpica, de aprender a bailar o incluso de interacción con mascotas virtuales.
La presentación de Kinect fue un adelanto de la multitudinaria conferencia de prensa que celebrará Microsoft el lunes por la mañana en Los Ángeles y donde se espera que se concreten los anuncios sobre Kinect y se conozca el nuevo catálogo de juegos para Xbox.

If Google's famously sparse home page is too plain for you, the company is giving you some more options.

A bold color photo of sand dunes replaced the white background to Google's search box Thursday. You can replace the desert scene with an image of your own or others available from Google. Or you can stick with the classic format.

In a blog post last week, Google Inc. said the move is aimed at making the "search experience more relevant, useful and fun through personalization."

It also follows an artistic choice made by Microsoft Corp.'s search engine, Bing, which also uses images as a background to its search box.

Al ingresar en esa opción, hay que loguearse en Gmail y luego se abre una ventana para seleccionar la imagen de fondo entre varias fotos artísticas o de la propia computadora. Fialmente, Click en "seleccionar".

While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it's clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here's the detailed list of our findings:

What's new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery.

El presidente ejecutivo de Apple, Steve Jobs, presentó el lunes el iPhone 4 con un nuevo diseño y más de 100 nuevas prestaciones.

El ejecutivo centralizó su presentación en las principales, dentro de las que se destaca el diseño del iPhone 4, un 24% más delgado que el 3GS, es decir, de apenas 9,3 milímetros de grosor. “Es el smartphone más delgado del mundo”, dijo Jobs.

El iPhone 4 posee una cámara frontal para videoconferencias, microSim, cámara posterior con flash de LED y un segundo micrófono para cancelación de ruidos.

De acuerdo a lo explicado, para la videoconferencia (Apple la llama FaceTime) se puede realizar con cualquiera de las dos cámaras del equipo, pero sólo cuando se dispone de Wi-Fi.

Apple, según Jobs, está trabajando con los proveedores para ofrecer esa posibilidad mediante conexiones 3G.

La demostración se vio entorpecida por la gran cantidad de usuarios conectados al Wi-Fi del Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), que se desarrolla en San Francisco.

Cuando Jobs quiso mostrar la aplicación del New York Times los asistentes vieron que la página no cargaba.

El iPhone 4 estará disponible en color blanco o negro, a un precio de u$s199 el de 16GB y u$s299 el de 32GB de capacidad en los EEUU, donde saldrá a la venta el 24 de junio. El modelo 3GS pasará a costar ahora u$s99.

Se espera que en julio el iPhone 4 esté disponible en otros 18 países, sobre todo en Europa. En agosto Apple ampliará la disponibilidad a otros 24 países y en septiembre a 88, momento en el cual llegará a la Argentina y demás países de la región.

Pantalla renovada
Aunque la retina humana es capaz de captar hasta 300 píxeles por pulgada, el nuevo iPhone tiene 326. La pantalla se mantiene en las 3,5’’, “pero hay cuatro veces más píxeles que en el iPhone 3GS”, dijo Jobs

El sistema, llamado “exposición de retina”, aumenta la densidad de pixeles de la pantalla para “obtener mucha mayor precisión. Usamos trucos como añadir algunos pixeles grises para ayudar al ojo a verlo. Cuando se hace zoom se obtienen imágenes muy buenas. Tiene 326 píxeles por pulgadas. Nunca ha habido una pantalla como ésta en un teléfono”, reseñó Jobs ante una audiencia sorprendida.

La pantalla ofrece una resolución de 960x640.

Más novedades
El iPhone 4 agrega el chip A4, el mismo procesador fabricado por Apple para la tablet iPad.

“Con una mejor batería y este procesador hay un 40% más de tiempo para hablar, 7 horas, 6 horas para navegar en 3G, 10 horas navegando en Wi-Fi, 40 horas de música, 10 de video y 300 horas stand by”, se explicó en la charla.

El dispositivo posee HSDPA/HSUPA, conecitividad Wi-Fi 802.11n y un nuevo giroscopio de tres ángulos, lo cual demuestra el entusiasmo de Apple por convertir a sus dispositivos de mano en gadgets orientados al juego.

“Junto al acelerómetro, ahora se detectan 6 ejes y así detectar mejor la posición del teléfono”, mencionó Apple.

Cámaras mejoradas
Al igual que en el resto de la industria, comienza a tomar peso la mejora de los lentes en lugar de la cantidad de megapíxeles. Apple mencionó ese hecho y dijo que había dotado al iPhone de una mejor cámara.

El nuevo iPhone 4 posee una cámara de 5 megapíxeles, zoom digital de 5x, flash de LED y la posibilidad de grabar en videos en HD con una resolución de 720P y a 30 cuadros por segundo.
